SYKE employs approximately 600 skilled and committed professionals. We produce relevant information, novel understanding and innovative solutions for achieving sustainable development. With an open mindset we seek new ways to work together with our collaborators. Our strengths include adaptability, which is exemplified by our recent shift to tele-work.
The age structure of SYKE's personnel is rather even compared to universities with more younger staff or to the faster ageing government personnel. About 56% of SYKE's personnel are women. Although SYKE is relatively equal when comparing men and women holding the same positions, the share of women in the most demanding research and expert positions as well as in higher management positions is lower than that of men.
Changes in SYKE's operating environment and the goals set for its operations require renewal and development. In addition to normal replacement and project driven recruitments, SYKE annually decides on strategic recruitments in emerging areas. SYKE offers its staff ample training and professional skill development. SYKE hosts also numerous PhD students, with close to ten graduating each year. Our latest PhD dissertation was by Sanna-Riikka Saarela on 24 June 2020.
SYKE gives Group Awards annually, to groups that have generated new results and outputs or developed new processes.
According to the personnel satisfaction surveys conducted in 2016 and 2018 (VMBaro), the personnel of the Finnish Environment Institute enjoy their work well, and more than government workers on average.
