A web service is a technical interface that enables the users to connect to the information on Finnish Environment Institute's (Syke) server and obtain the data they need access to. The use of the interface services requires an application that supports an interface solution (e.g. the WMS, Esri REST, OData), which can be either a GIS software or a browser application.
Syke is responsible for providing map services compliant to the INSPIRE Directive for the data listed in the national data list. The services consist of standard view, download and discovery services.
National Map Services complement the INSPIRE Directive Interface Services. For example, national map services may offer wider data content than INSPIRE interface services.
Syke is replacing its ArcGIS Server web map services (both INSPIRE and National web maps services) with GeoServer ones in 2023. Old URL’s beginning with https://paikkatieto.ymparisto.fi/arcgis can be used until the end of 2023.
Syke's Earth observation services provide near real time environmental data for example on water quality, water surface temperature and lake ice. This data is published through WMS interfaces and is available for browsing in Tarkka service.
Syke provides open services to public environmental data of the environmental information systems.
Syke applies Creative Commons By 4.0 International license for open datasets and map services.
