The research conducted at the Oulu office of the Finnish Environment Institute (Syke) focuses on monitoring the status of inland waters, managing catchment areas, developing water resource protection methods, studying stream habitat diversity, and developing general biodiversity indicators and a sustainable energy economy.
The office employs 40 people, who work for climate solutions, circular economy solutions, built environment solutions, nature solutions, marine and freshwater solutions, quality of information, societal change, research infrastructure and administrative services units.
The Oulu office operates a FINAS-accredited (T003) testing laboratory specialising in chemical environmental analyses. It also performs preliminary processing of water-management-related biological samples and provides various test arrangements in support of research activities.
The Oulu office is located in the Environmental Sciences Building, at the Linnanmaa campus of the University of Oulu. This location offers good opportunities for engaging in and improving co-operation within the University of Oulu, research institutes, Oulu university of applied sciences and with other stakeholders. The collaboration is best exemplified by joint projects, joint chairing of operations in the natural sciences and environmental economics, and joint use of laboratory services.
