The renewed Weather application allows you to access five-day weather and flood warnings on your mobile device. The service is part of cooperation between the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) and the Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE) at their shared Flood Centre. Watershed and flood warnings supplement the FMI's heavy rain and coastal flood warnings.
Flood Centre jointly run by the Finnish Meteorological Institute and SYKE predicts and issues warnings on floods
"The Flood Centre's activities utilise the Finnish Meteorological Institute's weather knowledge and expertise and SYKE's waters expertise," explains Eerik Saarikalle, head of the Flood Centre. "We also issue flood warnings via the Weather application, as it is very popular among citizens," Mr Saarikalle continues.
The Weather app shows users warnings based on the user's current location. The user can also select the entire country's map view and texts, which is useful when assessing the entire country's situation.
The Weather app shows warnings for a period of five days. The website introduced the five-day warning forecast in February.
The service has been financed by the FMI, the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and the Federation of Finnish Financial Services. "In February, the Finnish Meteorological Institute introduced five-day warning maps, which is an excellent reform. In addition to the new app, this will make it even easier to be prepared for weather phenomena," says Risto Karhunen, head of Security and Loss Prevention from the Federation of Finnish Financial Services.
