Current tasks

I am responsible for marine ecosystem modelling.

Research Topics

Since 2006 I have been working with marine biogeochemical models, particularly focusing on ice-covered oceans ecosystems. I am fascinated by everything sea ice, especially its ecology. I am the main developer of the first stoichiometric sea-ice model (http://www.bfm-community.eu), i.e. a sea-ice biogeochemical model that through internal flexible stoichiometry aims to represent the acclimation patterns that organisms manifest in their natural environment.

My scientific interests include:

  • the development of biogeochemical models (including sea ice, pelagic and benthic habitats) at several temporal  (from seasonal to decadal) and spatial (from local to global) scales
  • studies of phenology and phenological changes in polar marine environments
  • studies of the impacts of  climatic and non-climatic stressors on polar marine ecosystems
  • closing of the global carbon cycle
  • climate change scenarios and projections
  • the role of sea ice biota and biogeochemistry in the Earth system
  • adaptations and mitigations
  • development of models suitable for ecosystem management and as tool for decision makers
  • sicence communication, journalism and popularisation.

Background

I have a Master in Biological Oceanography (2005, Tuscia University, Italy) and PhD in Oceanography (2009, University of Bologna, Italy). Since 2019 I am Adj. Prof. in Aquatic Sciences at the University of Helsinki. Previously, I worked also at CNR (Venice, Italy), CMCC (Bologna, Italy), Finnish Institute of Marine Research (FIMR, Helsinki, Finland), Tallin Univeristy of Technology (Tallinn, Estonia), and Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI, Helsinki, Finland).
