Current tasks
I am a doctoral student in the Water and Environmental degree program at Aalto University, but I carry out my research at the Finnish Environment Institute’s Marine Research labs. I investigate the growth of various fungal species in food processing and biogas process wastewaters. The goal is to determine which nutrients they remove and in what amounts. In the end we hope to produce biomass which can be used as a product such as feed or soil conditioner. I am also investigating the ability of filamentous fungi to flocculate algae with the goal of producing an economical method of algal harvesting.
Background
I received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology at McDaniel College, MD, USA. I have worked as a research technician in biotechnology and biochemistry labs at the University of Helsinki. At the same time, I completed a MSc. in Environmental Biology at said university in 2010. In 2015 - 2016 I interned at SYKE where I developed a PCR assay which helped to identify the algal species responsible for a massive fish-kill off the coast of Raasepori in 2015.
