On Thursday 18 November 2021 the Päiviö Hetemäki Fund awarded Research Professor Timothy "Tim" Carter from the Finnish Environment Institute SYKE a commendation for his outstanding work advancing the topic of climate change adaptation in Finland.
Tim Carter has been a key figure in building the information base for Finland's adaptation policy for decades. He has led numerous research projects that have deepened our understanding of the impacts and risks of climate change in Finland and the need for adaptation. The work has also touched on the international dimensions of climate change as they can affect Finland, including impacts on aspects of human security, such as cross-border trade, infrastructure and migration. Climate change has emerged as a major security issue, with many countries identifying phenomena related to climate change as important in their national risk assessments.
Tim Carter's work on climate change impacts and adaptation highlights how long-term and in-depth research serves overall societal security while promoting international research on the issue. Tim Carter's distinguished work, which included contributions to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), has made Finnish research better known in the world and brought important influences to Finland. Carter has been a pioneer in identifying climate issues as an integral part of overall safety.
“I am delighted that the contribution of my field of research is recognised in raising awareness of the importance of climate change in affecting global and national security. This is also very timely, with the urgency of the issue having been highlighted at the COP-26 negotiations just concluded in Glasgow. I am greatly honoured to receive this award on behalf of a growing group of researchers and analysts, who are interested in examining the options available for building resilience to adapt to risks and future changes”, says Tim Carter.
