The European Parliament Committee on Environment, Public Health and Food Safety (ENVI) delegation visited the Finnish Environment Institute SYKE, where a new report on sustainable forest management was introduced. Also The Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE) delegation is on the visit which relates to the topics of bioeconomy, sustainable forest management, biofuels and enhancement of digital innovations.
As a densely forested country, relying on a legacy of sustainable forest management and advanced forest-based industry, Finland is in a special position facing the current sustainability challenges: climate change, biodiversity loss and stagnating economy.
SYKE (The Finnish Environment Institute) and IEEP (Institute for European Environmental Policy) prepared a background report on Sustainable forestry in Finland for the ENVI (Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety) Delegation. The report presented the history of forest management and governance as well as recent developments in climate change, energy and biodiversity policy, circular economy and bioeconomy. The report will be made public after the visit of the Delegation.
The lead author of the report, Dr Eeva Primmer from SYKE, says that Finland has an opportunity to take a lead in developing Europe’s sustainable forest management. She notes that "Bioeconomy should be developed in a way that secures ecosystem sustainability as well as the diversification of the use of forest biomass and forests".
“Increasing demand for wood creates a particular challenge of ensuring that the use of the Finnish forests is sustainable also from the climate perspective”, adds Jari Liski, Research Professor in SYKE, who contributed to climate change matters in the report.
